The Queensbury Spartans net four goals in the third period as they come back from a 4-1 deficit in their 5-4 win over Adirondack. Ollie Coughlan nets two goals for the Spartans, including the go ahead goal as Queensbury bounced back from the deficit thanks to a three goal tally in less than three minutes. Nate Di Fiore and Matt Perrotte score for the Adirondack Rivermen.
The win claims Queensbury the "Stick", the trophy that is awarded to the winner of the annual rivalry between local squads.
Meanwhile down in Saratoga Springs, Jack Murphy scores with 2:04 left as the Saratoga Blue Streaks defeat the Shenendehowa Plainsmen 3-2.
Entering the day, Shenendehowa led the Capital District High School Hockey League by a half point over Queensbury, but with the combined results, Queensbury leaps Shen in the standings to lead by that same half point.
The two teams meet Wednesday at the Fire Road Rink for the second time this season. Shenendehowa beat Queensbury down at the Clifton Park Arena back in December. In that game, Shen scored the first two goals, then Queensbury tied things up before the first intermission. It was all Shenendehowa afterwards, getting two goals from John Westrick on way to the 7-2 win.
Before those two teams meet, they will face the other local rivals, with Shenendehowa playing Adirondack on Friday down at the Clifton Park Arena, and Queensbury heading down to Weibel Ave Rink to face Saratoga on Saturday. Unless Shenendehowa loses and Queensbury wins this weekend, next Wednesdays game will be for the cup.
Queensbury enters the weekend riding a 9 game winning streak, with their last loss coming by Section 5's Notre Dame Batavia, on January 5th. The last time Queensbury finished the season as the top team in Section 2 to claim the Delvecchio Cup, was 15 years ago in 2009. Shenendehowa's last cup win was 2022.
Puck drop Wednesday is approximately 7:40pm.
